Our History of Doing What's Best for Animals

Our History of Doing What's Best for Animals

 SINCE 1894

 SINCE 1894

It Began with a Feed Named for Purity

More than 100 years ago, William H. Danforth recognized the need for consistent quality feed for the horses and mules that were helping build this country. So he started producing a feed he called Purina which stood for purity.

"Purina was his family. And he expected and demanded the best from each one of them."

Donald Danforth Jr., William Danforth’s grandson

Today, our experts continue working on our farm  to meet the needs of animals. Our products improve the weight of weanlings, increase milk production in dairy cows, reduce nutritional gaps in the diets of forage animals and more. And the Checkerboard has come to represent plainspoken honesty, corners uncut  and a job well done.

In the beginning, William Danforth would go out into the mill, pick up a shovel, and help mix and bag the feed.

Danforth remembered the red-and-white checkerboard clothing worn by the Brown family at markets that made them stand out. So he put the Checkerboard on every product.

In 1916, Purina opened a center for nutrition studies, the first step in establishing the quality we’re known for today.
