A successful show stock feeding program is comprised of clean water (always!), a solid base feed, good quality forage (for the ruminants) and when needed, supplements. The “heavy lifting” should always be done by the base feed, and Honor® Show base feeds are designed to supply the highest quality nutrition to support your run to the backdrop. High Octane® supplements, on the other hand, are used to cater to specific developmental needs of the animal such as fat cover, muscle development, fill, animal comfort, etc. It’s important to note that supplements are meant to be just that – supplemental to a high-quality base feed that should make up the bulk of the feeding program.
Supplement choices can be overwhelming, and confusing. We are constantly bombarded with flashy ads, bold claims, trendy names, etc., and influenced by what supplements we see sitting at the neighboring stalls when we are at a show. Here are some handy T.I.P.S. for proper incorporation of supplements into your show animals’ feed program.
Make sure you are using the correct supplement for the issue you are trying to address. Whether it's muscle development, fat cover, fill, etc, choosing the right product is key to achieving desired outcomes. Use these helpful graphics to help determine where our targeted supplements work.

Take the slow approach when adding in a supplement. Often supplements are super-concentrated with a certain nutrient such as fat, protein, or fiber which can upset the digestive system when added abruptly. It is important to slowly incorporate them into the diet over a few days. Start with half the targeted feeding rate and work up over 5-7 days.
Continually monitor progress via pictures and videos to make sure you don't overshoot your mark. Regular evaluations help you make timely adjustments and ensure that the supplement is working as intended.
When it comes to supplements, more is not always better and 1 1 doesn’t always equal 2. So, be strategic about supplement use to avoid moving backwards, and remember to keep the base feed at the forefront of your program.
Good luck to all exhibitors as you prep for the upcoming summer show season.
