FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You’ve got questions. Our animal people have answers.

  • How much should I feed my chicks each day?
Chicks should have access to free-choice feed. We recommend waiting to introduce treats or scratch to your chicks’ diet until week 18. If you are feeding a complete chick starter feed, your chicks do not need grit.
  • Do chickens like whole ingredients?
Yes! Chickens are naturally inquisitive, but they don’t have arms and hands to inspect things. They use their beaks to explore instead. Whole seeds, grains and vegetables encourage this natural instinct, which can help keep your ladies happy, healthy and pecking the day away.
  • What if my chicks are too small for the larger feed pieces?
We recommend feeding your chicks Farm to Flock 20% Starter Food continuously from hatch to 4-6 weeks then switching to Farm to Flock 18% Grower Food. However, chicks are different sizes. The smaller the chick, the smaller the food they can usually eat. So, if you feel the pieces are too large for them, stick with the Starter until you think they’re big enough.
  • When should I switch my chickens to a layer food?
Feed Farm to Flock 18% Layer Food free-choice as the sole ration to laying chickens after 18 weeks of age and throughout the laying cycle. It is not necessary to provide additional grain or free-choice calcium. This feed should not be fed to male birds of any age or to birds less than 18 weeks old. Provide fresh, clean water at all times.
  • What makes Purina different from other chicken feeds?
Purina has been conducting poultry research for nearly a century. Plus, we’re animal people, just like you. We even have a flock of backyard birds at the Purina Animal Nutrition Center to help our nutritionists, feed formulators and flock caregivers evaluate our feeds before we put them on the market. If you have questions, you can always reach out to the Purina Team for additional tips and advice.
